Ph.D. student workers at the University of Rochester initiated a strike this week to demand a fair union election process, opposing oversight by the Trump-era National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). Organizers contend that the current NLRB does not provide a viable path for fair representation. A previous agreement for a private election has since been rescinded by university officials, leading to a labor walkout that underscores the persistent struggle for unionization amidst shifting political landscapes.
"We don't see any kind of path through the NLRB at present," said George Elkind, a Ph.D. student. This strike reflects ongoing labor agitation post-Trump's election.
Scott Phillipson stated, 'UR officials simply do not want these employees to have a union. That is what is going on here.' This highlights the university's stance on unionization.
