Trump suggested kids have too many dolls. He might be right, but we get a lot more than toys from China.
Briefly

President Trump has implemented high tariffs on Chinese goods, including toys, sparking concerns about the potential impact on consumer shelves. While Trump downplays the significance by suggesting children can manage with fewer toys, experts highlight that many essential goods, such as electronics and medical equipment, largely come from China. Economists argue that some of these products were never manufactured in the US, making it challenging to shift supply chains or factories domestically without significant investments and time before they become profitable.
"Maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, and maybe the two dolls would cost a couple of bucks more than they would normally," Trump said.
"A lot of products that are subjected to tariffs were never made in the US, so we don't know how to make them," Willy C. Shih mentioned.
"Liquid crystal flat panel displays are made in Asia, mostly in China. We don't make them in the US and we never have made them here," Shih explained.
Shih emphasized that moving supply chains and establishing new factories take large investments in equipment and training, which usually pay off within years.
