President Trump has signed an executive order targeting public funding for NPR and PBS, accusing them of bias despite their reliance on private donations. The executive order directs the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to halt federal funding for these outlets, which receive minimal taxpayer support in their overall budgets. Trump's relationship with mainstream media has been contentious, contrasting sharply with his favorable stance towards conservative media. More than 40 million Americans engage with NPR weekly, while PBS reaches 36 million viewers monthly. This move raises questions regarding the CPB budget already approved by Congress.
Trump stated, 'I therefore instruct the CPB Board of Directors and all executive departments... to cease Federal funding for NPR and PBS.'
NPR Director Katherine Maher noted NPR would receive about $120m from the CPB in 2025, which constitutes less than 5% of its overall budget.
