President Trump abruptly canceled a planned White House meeting with top congressional Democratic leaders, calling their demands "unserious and ridiculous" and deeming a meeting unproductive. The cancellation heightened the risk of a government shutdown when funding expires on Oct. 1. Trump objected to Democratic proposals that included rolling back Medicaid changes from his tax bill and extending Affordable Care Act tax credits. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries had announced the meeting earlier. Jeffries called the president out as retreating and blamed extremists for risking a shutdown over a Republican healthcare crisis. Schumer accused Republicans of holding the country hostage and said they would own any shutdown.
