Troubled driver's mom begs he receive protective custody after shocking NYC synagogue crash
""It's not just that you are charged with attempting to seriously injure people with an automobile, but you are charged with doing it as a hate crime on their perceived membership of a religious class,""
""he's not harmed""
""Luckily no injuries were sustained,""
""This is an unacceptable and brazen attack on the members of the Chabad Lubavitch community.""
A 36-year-old New Jersey man allegedly drove a Honda into the entrance of the Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters in Crown Heights five times, prompting a person to flee inside. The driver, Dan Sohail, was arraigned on hate crime and attempted serious injury charges and held on $500,000 bail after prosecutors sought $1 million. The defendant’s mother pleaded for protective custody and said he has suffered mental illness and erratic behavior for a decade. The judge ordered protective custody, a psychiatric examination, and issued a protective order for the synagogue’s director of operations.
