During a recent visit to El Salvador's infamous CECOT prison, a bipartisan delegation led by Congressman Matt Gaetz observed the behavior of inmates from the Tren de Aragua gang. The inmates reacted aggressively, shouting and taunting the lawmakers. This visit highlights the controversial arrangements made under former President Trump's initiative to deport violent gang members to this notoriously overcrowded facility. The conditions and treatment of inmates at CECOT have raised significant concerns about human rights and public safety.
"We learned the stories of monsters, killers, satanic worship, human sacrifice, invaders to our land... Until they entered CECOT, they are a threat to America and El Salvador no more."
Hundreds of inmates in the Tren de Aragua area largely appeared to speak Spanish, so it was not entirely clear what they were shouting at the lawmakers. Some of them stood by their prison bars and waved at the lawmakers in the clamorous scene.
