Recent torrential rains and flash floods have hit the US south and midwest, causing rapid river swelling and leading to numerous flash flood emergencies from Texas to Ohio. The National Weather Service warns of impending major flood stages in several areas, impacting vital infrastructure. At least 16 fatalities are linked to severe weather, including tornadoes that occurred earlier. Cities like Louisville face significant flooding, with forecasts indicating severe impacts on shipping and supply chains due to saturated conditions and infrastructure damage, compounded by staffing shortages in weather services.
At least 16 weather-related deaths have been reported since the start of the storms, including 10 in Tennessee. A 57-year-old man died on Friday evening after getting out of a car that washed off a road in West Plains, Missouri.
Louisville mayor Craig Greenberg on Saturday said the Ohio River rose five feet (about 1.5 meters) in 24 hours and would continue to swell for days. We expect this to be one of the top 10 flooding events in Louisville history.
