Toddler Digs Up a Live WWII Grenade in Yard, Casually Brings It to His Parents
"As he drew closer, Amanda, 41, noticed the object in his small hands: pineapple-shaped, with a grooved exterior. "I'm like, 'OK. It's a novelty grenade, no big deal,'" Amanda tells TODAY.com. "Then I felt it... and it was heavy." Just to be safe, she took a photo and searched for it on Google Images. "Everything that popped up was hand grenade from World War II," Amanda says, recalling how she started to realize this was no toy."
""Bomb techs determined the grenade was live," the statement said, noting that the device has been safely disposed of. "The grenade was a type used during the Second World War and had clearly been exposed to the elements for some time. It's not known how the grenade ended up in the family's front yard nor how long it had been there.""
Amanda and her partner Zane purchased their first home and were unpacking in the garage when their 3-year-old son Damon discovered a pineapple-shaped, grooved object in the front yard. Amanda initially assumed it was a novelty grenade but found it heavy, photographed it, and searched online; results showed images of World War II hand grenades, prompting a 911 call. Grant County bomb technicians determined the device was live and safely disposed of it. The grenade had been exposed to the elements and its origin and duration in the yard are unknown. Amanda requested a full property sweep for children’s safety and peace of mind.
