"While the financial impact of this particular shutdown, the longest in U.S. history, has not yet been calculated, past closures have been costly to museums and other cultural sites that were forced to close. In addition to staff furloughs and suspended or canceled programs, the 2018-2019 shutdown resulted in a loss of some $5 billion, according to the American Alliance of Museums."
"The Smithsonian, which includes 21 museums and the National Zoo, will reopen on a "rolling basis." Beginning Friday, Nov. 14, the National Museum of American History, the National Air and Space Museum, and the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Virginia will reopen. All other museums and the National Zoo including the popular animal cams will reopen by Monday, Nov. 17."
Museums and other federally funded cultural sites are announcing reopening plans following the end of the government shutdown. Past shutdowns have produced costly losses, with the 2018-2019 closure resulting in roughly $5 billion in lost revenue, including about $3.4 million from Smithsonian retail and IMAX receipts and an estimated $1.2 million in National Gallery shop and restaurant revenue. Cultural institutions experienced staff furloughs, suspended or canceled programs, and large drops in visitation. The Smithsonian will reopen on a rolling basis, with key museums and the Udvar-Hazy Center opening Nov. 14 and all museums and the National Zoo reopening by Nov. 17. The National Gallery of Art will reopen its West Building and outdoor Sculpture Garden on Friday.
