"We were just all sitting at a table, chilling together, and then all of a sudden, we start hearing, like, pop sounds, several pop sounds, witness Sumaya Alqadhy told NBC Bay Area. And we start seeing people running. We all started running, and then we came to the parking lot. Everybody was running, screaming, and crying, witness Armando told KPIX."
"People were going under the tables. I went also under the tables and waited there probably five minutes, witness Emily Sanchez told KPIX. I was just looking at people's faces and looking how scared they were. There was so much chaos, and even a lot of people were getting injured running on the way out because there was a really narrow bottle-neck at the exits to the point where we got separated, witness Ali Danesh told NBC Bay Area."
A shooting occurred around 5:30 pm Friday in front of the Macy's at Westfield Valley Fair Mall on the Santa Clara–San Jose border. A man involved in an argument with the suspect was shot, and two bystanders—a woman and a 16-year-old girl—were also shot. Three people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Thousands of shoppers were evacuated as staff and law enforcement escorted barricaded people out. Witnesses described mass panic, people hiding under tables, and crowd injuries at narrow exits. The mall was temporarily closed pending investigation.
