President Donald Trump threatened to deploy National Guard troops to cities including Chicago and New York, mirroring armed National Guard deployments in Washington, D.C., intended to address crime, homelessness, and illegal immigration. Governor Maura Healey emphasized her role as commander-in-chief of the Massachusetts National Guard and highlighted the Guard's emergency response role. Healey called the threatened deployments political theater and said they do not improve public safety while federal funding for law enforcement, community policing, victim services, and the National Guard has been cut. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said the city is monitoring legal challenges and asserted Boston remains the safest major city. Healey said Massachusetts is prepared but opposes troop deployments to its streets.
This is political theater, it does nothing to improve public safety,
If Donald Trump really cared about public safety, he wouldn't be cutting funding for local law enforcement, which he's done, he wouldn't be cutting funding for community policing, which he's done, he wouldn't be cutting funding for victims services, which he's done. Oh, and by the way, he's cut funding for the National Guard, 40 percent.
We have been in their sights for months at this point because our city represents everything that showcases why they're wrong,
They're wrong on safety. We are the safest major city in the country because everyone is involved in safety here.
