These Democratic governors are trying to curb health care for unauthorized immigrants

Democratic governors in states providing health coverage to undocumented immigrants are rolling back these benefits, driven by budget issues and a pending Congressional proposal that would lower Medicaid funding. In California, Governor Gavin Newsom proposed freezing new enrollments for unauthorized individuals over 19 for Medi-Cal and imposing a $100 monthly premium. Although existing enrollees would be allowed to remain covered, criticism arises from both Republicans and some Democrats opposing these cuts amid ongoing budget negotiations.

"I don't want to be in this position, but we are in this position," Newsom said, acknowledging the tough decision to limit health coverage amid budget constraints.

California Assembly Minority Leader James Gallagher criticized Newsom’s proposal, saying, "The governor showed his priorities. He wants to continue to spend on health care for illegal immigrants. Billions and billions of dollars."
