"Airfare is often one of the biggest expenses of a vacation, but luckily travelers can save big by choosing to fly out of certain airports over others. The most affordable mainstream airports in the United States were in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Florida, and in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to a report from Expedia that was shared with Travel + Leisure. In fact, traveling out of these airports could save about 25 percent off the average flight cost compared to the country as a whole."
"Between April and June last year, the average ticket cost for domestic flights from Orlando was $284.54, according to the most recent available data from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Bureau of Transportation Statistics. During the same time period, the average ticket cost from Las Vegas was $284.74, and from Fort Lauderdale was $276.39. At the other end of the spectrum were major cities like New York City, San Francisco, and Washington D.C."
Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Las Vegas rank as the most affordable mainstream U.S. airports, with fares roughly 25% below the national average. Between April and June last year, average domestic ticket prices were about $284.54 from Orlando, $284.74 from Las Vegas, and $276.39 from Fort Lauderdale. Gulf Shores International Airport had the lowest average fare at $98.46, supported by Allegiant Air routes; Stockton Metropolitan (SCK) and St. Pete-Clearwater (PIE) also showed low fares. Major hubs such as New York City, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. tended to be more expensive. Orlando (MCO), Newark (EWR), and JFK often offer competitive international fares, and booking during shoulder seasons can reduce costs and avoid crowds.
