In Kerrville, Texas, severe flooding caused residents Melvin and Melinda Harris to flee their grape-colored motor home as the Guadalupe River rose dramatically. The flood reached waist-deep water within an hour, resulting in significant destruction to homes, loss of cars, and fatalities. As of Sunday afternoon, 68 people were confirmed dead, including 40 adults and 28 children, with dozens more missing. The area around Camp Mystic also sustained heavy damage, with rescue operations ongoing as volunteers assist in searching for victims. Governor Greg Abbott emphasized the state's commitment to finding those who are missing.
The Guadalupe River had soared so much that by the time Melvin and his wife came out of the motor home, the water was waist-deep. The river swelled more than 26 feet in less than an hour.
At least 68 people (40 adults and 28 children) have died in Kerr County. Ten others were killed in nearby counties and dozens are known to be missing.
Harris stated, "I don’t know that this place will ever recover from what happened. But I'm not ever going to live this close to water ever again."
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has said the state will continue looking for victims until everyone is found, including the missing campers from Camp Mystic.
