The Trump administration is reportedly considering closing four US consulates in France—Rennes, Lyon, Strasbourg, and Bordeaux—as part of broader efforts to reduce the State Department's size. American expatriates expressed their anger and concerns over the closures, fearing diminished safety and increased burdens. With Marseille and the US Embassy in Paris remaining as the only US resources, many believe it would strain services, making it harder to access essential help in emergencies. Protests have occurred at the Strasbourg consulate, emphasizing the emotional impact on these communities.
If these four are scrapped, Marseille would be the only remaining consulate in France, in addition to the US Embassy in Paris.
"Knowing that the consulate is here and accessible to me makes me feel more protected in the event of an emergency. This is a real source of comfort for me and my family," she said.
For Americans living abroad, it feels like the US does not care about us and the resources that we might need.
Some worry that closing consulates would strain the US Embassy in Paris and the Marseille consulate, leading to longer wait times for Americans in France.
