Nicolas Niarchos reports from Sudan, detailing the grim conditions faced by members of the Nuba ethnic groups in refugee camps amidst ongoing civil war. The conflict, characterized by atrocities, targets Black ethnic minorities, as the Sudanese Army clashes with the Rapid Support Forces. Niarchos highlights the Nuba Mountains as a significant refuge for the Nuba people who have historically resisted genocide. However, they now face dire hunger and threats from hostile forces, reflecting the humanitarian crisis and the complicity of supremacist ideologies that fuel violence and discrimination in the region.
They feel safe being there because they have managed to resist genocide before by hiding in these mountains. And then you start seeing the children with their distended bellies.
There's this very, very toxic combination of both supremacist ideology and giving 'spoils' to troops instead of paying them.
