The container shipping industry faces an unprecedented surge in 'blank sailings', where ships cancel their routes due to lack of demand. Following tariffs imposed by President Trump, shipments, particularly from China to the US West Coast, have dramatically decreased. Sea-Intelligence reports a 13% spike in blank sailings, projected to reach 28% soon, with the Port of Los Angeles expecting to lose significant capacity as import volumes decline by 31%. Experts deem this situation extreme and historically unparalleled in containerization.
This is very extreme,â says Simon Heaney, the senior manager of container research at Drewry, a maritime research and advisory firm. âItâs unprecedented in the history of containerization.
Data from the supply-chain research firm Sea-Intelligence shows that blank sailings to the US's West Coast spiked 13 percent this week, and is due to jump to 28 percent the week after.
