President Donald Trump announced a plan to close Washington's Kennedy Center for two years beginning July for construction. The announcement followed cancellations by leading performers and groups after Trump replaced previous leadership and added his name to the building. Trump chairs the Kennedy Center board, which has been filled with his allies. Trump and Kennedy Center President Ric Grenell described the center as deteriorating and pledged renovations, though they provided no evidence of disrepair. Grenell cited congressional funds for repairs and characterized the closure as brief. Trump had earlier pledged the center would remain open during renovations.
