The Americans Fled Vietnam 50 Years Ago. I Visited the Buildings They Left Behind.
Briefly

Nguyen Van Hiep recalls the dramatic events of April 29, 1975, during the Fall of Saigon as he witnessed chaotic evacuations from a nine-story apartment building. An American helicopter landed on the roof, and numerous Vietnamese civilians fought to board, spurred by desperation as the South Vietnam government collapsed. The scene, captured in a now-iconic photograph by Hubert Van Es, was later misrepresented, leading to misunderstandings about the actual events happening at the Pittman building, where a C.I.A. employee was helping evacuees.
It was very chaotic, only people in the building could go.
Everyone was fighting to get up there, said Mr. Hiep, whose father helped maintain the building known as the Pittman.
