Thailand's Supreme Court ruled that Thaksin Shinawatra must serve a one-year prison term for prior convictions of graft and abuse of power because his earlier detention procedures were improperly enforced. A judge found that detention in a police hospital did not count as serving prison time. Thaksin returned from self-exile and spent less than a day in prison before being moved to a hospital suite reportedly for medical reasons. His original eight-year sentence was commuted to one year by the king, and he was released on parole after six months in the hospital. Thaksin is expected to be sent to Bangkok Remand Prison. His daughter Paetongtarn thanked the king and described him as a continuing spiritual leader in politics.
