Kathy Hochul responded to Ted Cruz's comments regarding her wearing a hijab at a police officer's funeral. The officer, Didarul Islam, was Muslim and had been killed in a mass shooting. Hochul highlighted that wearing a head covering was a gesture of respect for the officer's faith and grieving family. Cruz's remarks were criticized, and Hochul stated that leaders should honor such traditions 'with basic decency.' Islam was awarded a posthumous promotion and was known for his dedication to the police department and faith.
"Respecting a grieving family's faith is 'wut' leaders and anyone with basic decency would do," she wrote on the social platform X.
Hochul responded sharply to Cruz's post Saturday, saying that for her, wearing a head covering was a simple matter of honoring the fallen officer.
The photo was taken at the funeral of Didarul Islam, a New York City police officer who was among those killed in the shooting last Monday at 345 Park Avenue.
Islam, 36, who was awarded a posthumous promotion to detective, was Muslim, and his hourslong funeral was held at his mosque in the Bronx.
