Team USA speedskater Conor McDermott-Mostowy on Olympic swag, thicc thighs & taking off like a rocket ship - Queerty
Conor McDermott-Mostowy accelerates off the start with forces up to six Gs, a sensation comparable to fighter pilots. He began skating with his family and became captivated by speed skates, which sit on top of high-tempered carbon steel with 16 to 19-inch blades sharpened to a 90-degree angle. An illness sidelined him before the 2022 Beijing Olympics, forcing him to pause school and lose strength. After a four-year recovery, he won the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 1000-meter event in January, secured a place on Team USA, and enters the Milan Games stronger and with momentum.
""There's very little you can do in your life that will be comparable," he tells Queerty. "Unless you're a fighter pilot, you've probably not experienced the sensation.""
""[My parents] could've just bought me some new skates and saved 16 years of time," he adds."
""You're like slow motion falling, just watching it slip away from you," he said."
