States See Mixed Bag on BEAD Benefit of the Bargain Applications

The Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program is witnessing varied application trends among states, following changes allowing non-fiber technologies. Arizona and Vermont exemplify states that have received applications for all eligible rural areas, with Arizona reporting 206 applications from 28 operators across various technologies. Vermont's applications also include a technological mix. Conversely, states like New Mexico have reported significant increases in applications, while others have not disclosed their metrics. The Arizona Commerce Authority reported receiving 206 applications from 28 network operators for the rural broadband deployment program, featuring all technology types.
Christine Hallquist, executive director of the Vermont Community Broadband Board, expressed satisfaction with the applications received, citing a mix of technologies including fiber, hybrid-fiber coax, and low Earth orbit satellite technology.
