Star of HBO's Chimp Crazy sentenced to nearly four years in prison
Briefly

A Missouri woman was sentenced to 46 months in prison for perjury and obstructing justice regarding the treatment of her chimpanzee, Tonka. Tonia Haddix ran a primate facility and pleaded guilty to charges after Peta filed a lawsuit against her for keeping chimps in improper conditions. Haddix falsely claimed that Tonka had died and was cremated but was later discovered alive by Peta. Following her release, she will undergo three years of supervised release as part of her sentence.
Haddix, who ran a primate facility in Festus, pleaded guilty in March to perjury and obstructing justice, related to the treatment of the chimp, Tonka.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) accused her of keeping chimps in cramped enclosures and later intervened to rescue Tonka.
Haddix claimed Tonka had died and she had cremated him, but he was later found alive in a cage in her basement by Peta.
Haddix was sentenced to 46 months in prison and ordered to serve an additional three years of supervised release after her sentence.
