Smith Point Bridge In Shirley Closed To Vehicles Over 3,000 Lbs During High Winds On Sunday
"At around 1:30 p.m., visitors to the popular oceanfront beach were told to check their registrations for the weight of their vehicles, and if they were over 3,000 lbs, they would not be able to traverse the bridge that crosses from the bay side to the ocean side. Around an hour before that, it was restricted to 6,000 lbs. The weight allowed on the bridge is 3 tons."
"The news came just before 2 p.m. on Sunday - close to high tide - and a time when, normally, visitors, including beachcombers and board walkers, as well as fishermen and surfers, are seen driving by or parking briefly to check conditions. The park, like other open areas around the county, was also expected to draw stargazers set on seeing the expected meteor shower later tonight."
High winds prompted weight restrictions on the Smith County Park bridge in Shirley, first limiting vehicles to 6,000 lbs and later to 3,000 lbs. Visitors arriving around 1:30 p.m. were instructed to check registrations and turn back if their vehicles exceeded 3,000 lbs; they could park and walk across the bridge. The bridge, erected in the 1950s at the end of William Floyd Parkway, links Shirley to Fire Island National Seashore and Smith Point County Park. The parking lot was nearly empty during normally peak hours. Engineers identified the bridge for work in 2022; plans call for a new bridge with a multi-purpose walkway, 55-foot clearance, an accessible fishing pier, an overlook, and recreational courts.
