Second US military zone along border with Mexico set up to deter migrants
Briefly

The US military has designated a new 100-kilometre military zone along the Texas-Mexico border to assist with migrant detentions, following a similar zone in New Mexico. Under these zones, troops can temporarily detain migrants, subsequently transferring them to civilian authorities. This move aligns with President Trump’s aggressive immigration policies, aiming to enhance border security without invoking the Insurrection Act. Despite the military's involvement, civilian law enforcement, such as the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), retains jurisdiction over illegal crossings. Currently, about 11,900 troops are stationed at the border amid heightened enforcement efforts.
The establishment of the Texas National Defense Area strengthens the military's role in immigration enforcement, allowing temporary detention of migrants before transferring them to civil authorities.
These military zones, intended to bolster the Trump administration's crackdown on illegal immigration, facilitate the use of troops without needing to invoke the Insurrection Act.
