A powerful tornado swept through Kentucky and Missouri, causing extensive damage, leaving many homeless, and resulting in over 24 fatalities. Particularly hard-hit was southeastern Laurel County, Kentucky, with 19 confirmed deaths. Residents, including Jeff Wyatt who narrowly escaped injury, are now sifting through the wreckage and salvaging personal items. "If we would have been there 10 seconds longer, we would have been gone with the family room," recounted Jeff Wyatt, whose home was destroyed by the tornado.
Kentucky was hardest hit as a devastating tornado damaged hundreds of homes, tossed vehicles and left many homeless, with at least 19 fatalities reported.
The storms were part of a weather system Friday that killed seven in Missouri and two in northern Virginia, highlighting the widespread impact of severe weather.
The National Weather Service warned of a fresh multi-day mix of dangerous weather across the nationâs midsection, forecasting more severe storms for Kentucky.
