"The Rays announced that they've released former top prospect Forrest Whitley to pursue an opportunity in Japan. Tampa Bay had selected him onto the 40-man roster a couple weeks ago to avoid losing him to minor league free agency. When the former first-round pick evidently found a better opportunity overseas, the Rays were willing to let him depart. More to come."

The Tampa Bay Rays released former top prospect Forrest Whitley so he could pursue a professional opportunity in Japan. Tampa Bay had placed Whitley on the 40-man roster weeks earlier to prevent him from reaching minor league free agency. Whitley, a former first-round pick, apparently received an overseas offer that the club judged preferable to retaining him under contract. The Rays responded by allowing him to depart rather than blocking the move. The roster addition briefly protected Whitley from free agency before the team agreed to release him for the Japan opportunity.
