Hollywood Burbank Airport sits less than 10 miles from Van Nuys Airport and handles a wide mix of commercial airliners, helicopters, and private aircraft, creating closely spaced arrival and departure paths. The airport served more than 5.7 million passengers between January and November last year. The National Transportation Safety Board raised safety concerns following a Jan. 29, 2025 midair collision that killed 67 people. Burbank is constructing a new terminal this year because the 1930 terminal sits closer to the runway than FAA standards allow. The FAA said it is evaluating hotspot airports and examining traffic flows around Burbank and Van Nuys.
