"Portland could soon have its own, albeit much smaller, Brooklyn Bridge. City councilors on Thursday will consider giving the name to a four-lane Holgate Boulevard overpass between Southeast 17th Avenue and 26th Avenue in Portland's Brooklyn neighborhood. The bridge stretches over the Union Pacific Brooklyn train yard and, so far, has been nameless. "It's something we really wanted to do for the neighborhood," City Councilor Angelita Morillo, who introduced the proposal with Councilor Olivia Clark, said in a Feb. 9 transportation committee meeting."
"The Brooklyn Action Corps, the neighborhood association for the area, led the charge to name the oft-overlooked bridge, Morillo said. The bridge has been named the "Brooklyn Bridge" on Google Maps for several years, but the Portland City Council vote would make the moniker official and pay for signage. The Portland Bureau of Transportation estimated that new signs and the labor to place them would cost $2,000. Morillo's office would pick up the tab."
City councilors will consider naming the four-lane Holgate Boulevard overpass between Southeast 17th Avenue and 26th Avenue in Portland's Brooklyn neighborhood 'Brooklyn Bridge'. The bridge spans the Union Pacific Brooklyn train yard and has been nameless until the proposal. The Brooklyn Action Corps led the neighborhood effort, and Google Maps has labeled the span 'Brooklyn Bridge' for several years. The Portland Bureau of Transportation estimated sign materials and installation would cost $2,000, with Councilor Angelita Morillo's office covering the expense. The designation recognizes the bridge's physical and cultural link for residents.
