Pope's visit to Lebanon sparks hope but also frustration
""The church's mission is for everyone, for all Lebanon,""
""The poverty in our country is increasing every day and that's why the pope will say a lot of things to encourage us to be more effective in society and especially in our church.""
""escaped""

Our Lady of Lebanon sanctuary in Harissa features a giant statue of the Virgin Mary atop a spiral pedestal overlooking the Mediterranean. Lebanon is a small multi-faith country with about 30 percent Christian population, the largest share in the Middle East. Independence Day passed quietly amid ongoing economic collapse, the 2019 financial crisis, the 2020 Beirut port explosion that killed 218 people, and a fragile ceasefire with Israel punctuated by strikes.
