"Dalton is happy in his role as Bryce Young's backup at Carolina, which is above .500 (4-3) for the first time this late in the season since 2019. The soon-to-be 38-year-old is ready for an opportunity to start, which appears likely Sunday against the Buffalo Bills ( 1 p.m. ET, Fox), as Young is dealing with a sprained ankle suffered in the third quarter of Sunday's 13-6 win at the New York Jets."
"Dalton isn't looking to permanently replace Young as seemed to be the case last season, when Young was benched following a 0-2 start. Dalton might have finished the 2024 season as the starter had it not been for an Oct. 22 car accident in which he suffered a sprained thumb that sidelined him for the next game. Young started the rest of the games and finally showed the promise of living up to being the No. 1 pick of the 2023"
Andy Dalton is comfortable serving as the Carolina Panthers backup quarterback and is prepared to start while Bryce Young recovers from a sprained ankle. Dalton spent his first nine NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and declined exploring a return to Cincinnati this season. The Panthers are 4-3, their best record this late in a season since 2019. Young suffered the ankle injury in the third quarter of a 13-6 win at the New York Jets and is expected to miss at least one start. Dalton is not seeking a permanent replacement role. An Oct. 22 car accident previously sidelined Dalton with a sprained thumb and prevented him from potentially finishing 2024 as the starter.
