Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega condemned Donald Trump during a May 1 rally after remaining largely silent for over 100 days. His critique followed a U.S. State Department report celebrating Trump's initial accomplishments, which labeled Ortega’s regime an adversary. Ortega's speech highlighted his opposition to Trump's immigration policies and authoritarian tendencies, referring particularly to the separation of families at the border. This marked a significant shift as Ortega's government had previously maintained a cooperative stance towards the U.S., even withdrawing from a controversial case at the International Court of Justice.
“These are already horrendous crimes horrendous like holding a two-year-old girl in prison, kidnapped, and attacking her poor mother,” Ortega declared, criticizing Trump’s immigration policies.
Ortega railed against Trump for over half an hour, denouncing the Republican president's anti-immigration policies, trade tariffs, expansionist ambitions, and authoritarian posturing during the May 1 celebration.
