Opinion: Saving journalism and local news means helping democracy, support SB 686
Briefly

Amidst the chaos of contemporary politics, reliable news is imperative for informed decision-making in democracy. Unfortunately, the last two decades have seen a significant decline in local news outlets, with Oregon losing 71% of its newspaper staff from 2017 to 2022. This has created a void filled with less credible sources. In response, Oregon proposes Senate Bill 686 to rejuvenate local news by injecting funds, supporting job creation, and fostering innovation, which could serve as a model for other states looking to revitalize their local media landscapes.
In times like these, when politics are in turmoil and the amount of information is overwhelming, reliable and trustworthy news is essential for Democracy.
