"Oh, Shit, That Was Alex": What It's Like to Discover That Your Friend and Colleague Was Killed by Federal Agents
Briefly

"We were at [my son's ski] race in the morning, and one of the other parents said, "Did you hear there was another shooting?" It sort of filtered through: "It sounds like another shooting." "Another person died." And there was a lot of sort of like, "This is just heavy." "Awful.""
"And then we got back from the race, and on a group chat, someone said, "ICE executed Alex Pretti."[ Editor's note: It later became clear that the officers were with Customs and Border Protection.] It was from our group that we had had when we had first hired him to be study staff on our research project. It was like, What? You have to be kidding me."
"I had seen one of the videos. [In it,] you can't see the defined definitions of someone's face and recognize them. But once the name was out there and I saw the build, the facial hair, it's like, Oh, shit, that was Alex."
Alex Pretti, 37, was pushed to the ground and fatally shot by federal agents. Video shows that moments before the shooting Pretti held a cellphone in one hand while his other hand was raised. Pretti worked as an ICU nurse at a VA hospital, enjoyed biking, and had a dog named Joule. A colleague first heard about the shooting at a child's ski race and later saw a group chat message alleging "ICE executed Alex Pretti." An editor's note clarified the officers were with Customs and Border Protection. A colleague recognized Pretti in a blurry video by build and facial hair and described him as kind and cooperative who took a difficult nursing job straight out of school. The colleague noted widespread protest activity in Minneapolis across age groups.
