Oakland police Chief Floyd Mitchell intends to resign effective Dec. 5 after serving less than two years as chief. Mitchell was appointed in 2024. Officials did not provide a reason for the resignation or indicate whether a search for a successor has begun. Mitchell pledged to help ensure a smooth transition and to continue efforts to keep Oakland safe. Mayor Barbara Lee credited Mitchell with significant reductions in crime and praised his focus on community-centered policing. City Administrator Jestin Johnson expressed gratitude for Mitchell's service and support for department personnel and said an interim chief will be identified.
