Notorious anti-LGBTQ+ New York Archbishop Dolan retires - here are his worst moments
"Although Cardinal Timothy Dolan occasionally made some affirming public statements about LGBTQ+ people, in the whole, he was not friendly to them,"
"The list of snubs and offenses he committed is dishearteningly long. After Pope Francis's more positive approach to LGBTQ+ people started catching on in the church, but he made some kind remarks, but they were often qualified."
"We are happy to see him go,"
Cardinal Timothy Dolan retired at the mandatory age of 75 and will be succeeded in New York by Bishop Ronald Hicks, who led the Diocese of Joliet since 2020. The Archdiocese of New York contains 2.8 million Catholics across New York City and surrounding counties, second only to Los Angeles. LGBTQ+ advocates say Dolan occasionally made affirming remarks but was largely unfriendly and responsible for numerous snubs and offenses; some of his comments were qualified even after Pope Francis adopted a more positive approach. Activists expressed relief at his departure. Dolan opposed New York's 2011 marriage equality bill, calling the movement "not antigay" and framing it as opposing threats to marriage.
