A new requirement effective Wednesday mandates that travelers in the U.S. present a Real ID, passport, or federally recognized document for domestic flights. This has led to widespread scrambling for appointments, especially in New Jersey, which has the lowest compliance rate in the nation with only 17% of IDs being Real IDs. Individuals like Melissa Sussko have resorted to late-night searches online to secure appointments, while others like Al Sohi have given up completely in favor of using passports for travel instead.
Starting on Wednesday, travelers in the United States will need a Real ID, passport or other federally recognized document to board domestic flights.
Perhaps nowhere is the search for appointments as intense as it is in New Jersey, where just 17 percent of state-issued IDs are Real IDs.
Melissa Sussko, 26, of Nutley, N.J., said the only reason she had managed to find an appointment for a Real ID was because a friend recommended looking online at midnight.
Al Sohi, 54, a driving instructor in North Caldwell, N.J., said he had given up looking for an appointment and planned to use his passport for travel.
