Newton removed green, white, and red paint covering the double yellow centerlines on Adams Street to restore visibility and public safety. Mayor Ruthanne Fuller and DPW Commissioner Shawna Sullivan acknowledged the lines had caused "a lot of consternation" and said restoring the double yellow lines was necessary. Residents had painted tri-color stripes for nearly 100 years and consider them central to Nonantum's identity. Crews removed the colors in June before the Italian heritage festival, and residents repainted them until crews washed them off again on Aug. 27. A small group of protesters lined Adams Street, saying they "don't want their history erased." Residents may paint colors alongside yellow lines, fire hydrants, and crosswalks in specific locations where federal regulations allow it.
