New York leaders, defying Trump, rehang Stonewall Inn Pride flag in chaotic scene
"We have raised our flag,"
"We have brought pride back to our sacred space."
"erase"
"raise the flag"
New York city, state and federal officials rehoisted the Pride flag at the Stonewall National Monument after the National Park Service removed it and replaced it with the American flag. The Park Service said the removal complied with an Interior Department order limiting flags and logos on federal property. The removal outraged local leaders and activists, who accused the Park Service of trying to "erase" LGBTQ+ history. Officials used zip ties to attach a new Pride flag and declared victory, but parts of the crowd objected to its position below the U.S. flag. Two people then removed the American flag and adjusted the display so the Pride flag flew slightly higher amid chants of "raise the flag" and "shame."
