New Orleans Archdiocese agrees to pay nearly $180M to victims of clergy sexual abuse
Briefly

The Archdiocese of New Orleans has reached a settlement of nearly $180 million to compensate victims of clergy sexual abuse, as revealed in a recent announcement. This financial agreement involves the archdiocese, its parishes, and multiple insurers, placing funds into a trust for survivor benefits post-bankruptcy. However, many survivors and their attorneys have expressed dissatisfaction, claiming the deal was reached without proper transparency and would likely be rejected by the majority of affected individuals. The agreement includes provisions for safeguarding against future abuse and aims to support survivor services, but it remains contentious.
This proposed settlement was made in a secret backroom deal that the Archdiocese, the creditors committees and the mediators knew the overwhelming majority of victim-survivors would never agree to and will undoubtedly vote down.
The Archdiocese of New Orleans and Archbishop Gregory Aymond are throwing this offer out to prevent victims and survivors from taking their claims to state court.
