Myanmar's Min Aung Hlaing takes first foreign tour as leader, with visit to India
India’s foreign ministry said the visit runs from Saturday to Wednesday. Min Aung Hlaing will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian business leaders, and President Droupadi Murmu. The trip is his first international travel since being sworn in as president in April after elections dismissed by Western governments and rights groups as a sham. In 2021, he led the Tatmadaw’s coup that deposed Aung San Suu Kyi’s elected government and triggered a five-year civil war. New Delhi said the visit is expected to strengthen multi-faceted relations. Analysts expected a first trip to China, but it did not occur, possibly due to Xi Jinping’s other high-profile state visits and the need for more agenda preparation.
