Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a refugee from Myanmar who was mostly blind and unable to speak English, went missing after being released from the Erie County Holding Center. Border Patrol agents allegedly dropped him at a Tim Hortons approximately five miles from his residence without informing his attorney or family. Alam had multiple health conditions, was unable to use a phone, and could not communicate in English. His body was discovered five days later. Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan issued a statement condemning the release as unprofessional and inhumane, characterizing it as a dereliction of duty by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and release from custody.
