"Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz have been indicted on charges they took bribes from sports bettors to throw certain types of pitches, including tossing balls in the dirt instead of strikes, to ensure successful bets. According to the indictment unsealed Sunday in federal court in Brooklyn, the highly-paid hurlers took several thousand dollars in payoffs to help two unnamed gamblers from their native Dominican Republic win at least $460,000 on in-game prop bets on the speed and outcome of certain pitches."
"Georgalis said Ortiz's defense team had previously documented for prosecutors that the payments and money transfers between him and individuals in the Dominican Republic were for lawful activities. "There is no credible evidence Luis knowingly did anything other than try to win games, with every pitch and in every inning. Luis looks forward to fighting these charges in court," Georgalis said."
Two Cleveland Guardians pitchers, Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz, face federal indictments alleging they accepted bribes from sports bettors to alter pitch outcomes and enable successful in-game prop bets. The indictment alleges several thousand dollars in payoffs helped two unnamed gamblers from the Dominican Republic win at least $460,000 on wagers tied to pitch speed and location. Major League Baseball placed both players on non-disciplinary paid leave in July after detecting unusual in-game betting activity. Ortiz was arrested at Boston Logan International Airport and is expected to appear in federal court; Clase was not in custody. Ortiz's lawyer denies wrongdoing and plans to contest the charges.
