Mississippi woman kills escaped monkey fearing for her children's safety
"I did what any other mother would do to protect her children,"
"I shot at it and it just stood there, and I shot again, and he backed up and that's when he fell."
A transport truck overturned, allowing rhesus monkeys to escape near Heidelberg, Mississippi. A 16-year-old alerted his mother after he believed he saw a monkey in the yard. The homeowner retrieved a firearm, confronted the monkey about 60 feet away, and shot it, saying she feared for her children's safety. Jasper County authorities confirmed a homeowner found one of the monkeys and transferred it to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. The monkeys had been housed at the Tulane University National Biomedical Research Center, and Tulane stated the animals do not belong to the university nor were they being transported by it.
