Negotiators from Iran and the U.S. are set to meet in Rome for vital discussions on Iran's nuclear program amid rising tensions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff are attended by Oman's Foreign Minister as mediator. A key sticking point is Iran's uranium enrichment, which the U.S. demands must cease completely for sanctions relief. Araghchi has stated that without some form of enrichment, there will be no deal. The talks are under pressure as U.S. sanctions severely impact Iran's economy following Trump's withdrawal from a previous nuclear agreement in 2018.
"Figuring out the path to a deal is not rocket science," the Iranian foreign minister said on social platform X, adding that it was "time to decide."
US President Trump's officials insist that Tehran needs to completely halt enriching uranium to reach any deal that could see the lifting of sanctions on Iran's burdened economy.
