"David Stearns on Tuesday said he was "optimistic" that Lindor would be ready for Opening Day on March 26."
""If we get to the point where we get closer to Opening Day and there are questions about Francisco, then we'll cross that bridge when we get there," Stearns said Tuesday. "But, at this point, we're optimistic that regardless of what Francisco needs, he's going to be ready for Opening Day.""
"Lindor, 32, has played through soreness "for a couple of years," Stearns said, but the discomfort resurfaced in recent days after he reported to camp and they decided to see a specialist."
Francisco Lindor will undergo surgery for a stress reaction in his left hamate bone. The hand surgery requires a six-week recovery and raises questions about Opening Day availability on March 26. Lindor, 32, played through hand soreness for a couple of years, and the discomfort resurfaced after he reported to camp, prompting a specialist evaluation. Spring training shortstop options include Vidal Brujan, Ronny Mauricio, Christian Arroyo and Jackson Cluff, with Arroyo and Cluff as nonroster invites and Mauricio having limited MLB starts. Bo Bichette could move to third base after signing a three-year, $126 million deal. Lindor has six years and $194.9 million remaining on his contract and posted a .267 average with 31 home runs, 31 steals and 86 RBIs in 2025. Lindor has not been on the injured list since 2021, has played at least 152 games in each of the last four seasons, missed several games late in 2024 but returned to help the team reach the National League Championship Series, and played last season through a broken right pinky toe.
