Tencia Benavidez began VR workouts with Supernatural during the Covid pandemic and remained a regular user for five years because of the community and enthusiastic coaches. Meta purchased Supernatural in 2022 after a legal battle with the US Federal Trade Commission over antitrust concerns; Meta prevailed in court. Some users hoped Meta’s resources would sustain the service. Bloomberg reported that Meta later laid off more than 1,000 people across its VR and metaverse efforts, including most Supernatural staff, and shut down several internal VR studios. Some users expressed frustration and disbelief at the shutdown. Meta and Supernatural did not respond to requests for comment.
