Mass. actually had 4 tornadoes Saturday, says National Weather Service
"With estimated gusts in the 86 to 110 mph range, EF1 tornadoes are the second-lowest intensity rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. However, NWS Boston said the intensity of the tornadoes in Paxton and Holden were "on the lower end of that range." Saturday's storm wreaked havoc in some parts of Central and Western Massachusetts, downing trees, causing power outages and road blockages, and damaging homes."
"A full summary of the team's findings is expected Tuesday. "The survey team is still identifying how long the tracks and how wide the tornadoes may have been," Andrew Loconto, lead meteorologist at the NWS office in Norton, told The Boston Globe. While Loconto reportedly said there was nothing irregular in the setup of Saturday's storm, he noted the environment was "favorable for both damaging straight-line wind and for low-level rotation.""
NWS Boston confirmed four weak EF1 tornadoes touched down in Central Massachusetts, including brief touchdowns in Paxton and Holden and additional tornadoes in Berlin and Stow. EF1 tornadoes have estimated gusts of 86 to 110 mph, with the Paxton and Holden tornadoes assessed on the lower end of that range. The storm downed trees, caused power outages and road blockages, and damaged homes across Central and Western Massachusetts. A survey team examined damage in Otis and Blandford with no tornado evidence found there; a full summary of findings is expected Tuesday. The team is still identifying track lengths and widths. The environment was favorable for both damaging straight-line wind and for low-level rotation, and the tornadoes may have been part of the same storm cell pending verification.
