""Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone," Kern de Gonzales wrote, adding that the incident came after "two years of threats" over their sexuality. "We were standing side by side. When the man fired, Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life.""
"Ceja Alvarez fled the scene in a vehicle but told police officers, "I shot him," when detained by authorities. He also admitted that he "intentionally and knowingly discharged a weapon," according to a police report obtained by PEOPLE."
"Ceja Alvarez's attorney told KSAT in late June that the shooting was done in self-defense, explaining that it had "nothing to do with sexual orientation," but rather resulted from a "very long time of torment in that neighborhood" from Joss."
Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, 57, was indicted on one count of murder by a grand jury on November 17. He was arrested following Jonathan Joss's death in June and initially charged with first-degree murder before posting a $200,000 bond and being released. Jonathan Joss Gonzales was fatally shot at the site of his burned-down San Antonio home on June 1 after a heated dispute with Ceja Alvarez. Tristan Kern de Gonzales witnessed the shooting and reported that Ceja Alvarez approached while yelling violent homophobic slurs and fired; Joss pushed his husband out of the way, saving him. Ceja Alvarez told officers, "I shot him," and admitted he "intentionally and knowingly discharged a weapon." His attorney later called the shooting self-defense and denied a motive tied to sexual orientation. Joss voiced John Redcorn on King of the Hill, played Chief Ken Hotate on Parks and Recreation, and recorded lines for a Hulu revival before his death.
